I have to admit, I am not a fan of matching bridesmaid dresses. Why must we always stick everyone in a band of identical dresses? Whether they are all wearing tiffany blue, chocolate brown, tangerine tango or royal plum--does it really look better to have all your favorite ladies looking like members of the high school flag team?

I think dressing a bridal party in mismatched yet harmonious colors looks so much better-so much more organic and natural....like an impressionist painting! Less sports team more Monet.

There are things all around to base a palette on. For instance, today I picked up this lovely little vintage brooch. I'm guessing the pin is from the 30's, maybe 40's. I loved the soft luminous color scheme. A pistachio green, regency blue and soft pink. From there I kept finding things in those colors--gloves, shoes, dresses....all pieces that would all look so great mixed and matched together.

Top Ten Dresses of 2011

Coming in at number 10...this pink and red early 60's Mad Men silk chiffon show-stopper was meant to break hearts, which it did when it sold the same day it came in. If I had a thousand of these frocks I could retire early---though I wouldn't want to!

9:By far one of the most exciting things that happened in 2011 was seeing one of my dresses on the White House Steps. See the elegant lady on the far right? That's White House Chief of Protocol Capricia Marshall wearing a gown she purchased at Xtabay. Goal for 2012 finding a dress for Michelle...

The gown that made it to the White House....1960's ice blue beaded gown made in Hong Kong and formerly owned by Lee Iacocca's personal secretary--How random is that?

Coming in at number 8: The ethereal 1950's illusion lace neckline wedding gown. Worn her by Krystal South and photographed out at Sauvies Island by Holly Andres.

Coming in at number 7 is this breathtaking Edwardian lace wedding gown form 1910. We sold this to a beautiful bride this past year and I can't wait to see pictures from her wedding!

Number 6: This fantastic 1960's fire engine red silk chiffon party dress earned over 100 likes on our facebook page, making it the most "liked" dress of the year. I like it too...

5: When Portlandia star Carrie Brownstein came by the shop looking for a dress to wear to the Portlandia premier in New York I had no idea what impact it would have. Luckily we were able to put together the perfect outfit and landed a mention in People magazine! Whoo hoo!

Dress number 4 is one of the most beautiful constructed silk chiffon gowns we have ever featured. This ivory grecian goddess gown looks so much like a Madame Gres gown I searched every seam for a label--but couldn't find anything. Oh well, beauty doesn't need a label...

Number 3: Speaking of Goddess gowns is another label-less beauty. This exquisite egyptian revival gown looks to be from the 70's and I can't help but wonder if this gown was made to coincide with the legendary King Tut exhibition that toured the states at that time.

Tied at number 2: Readers, I think you should decide-- should it be the painted silk couture garden party dress from the late 50's by Arnold Scassi OR the over the top tangerine tango ( Pantone's color of the year) 50's lace party dress. Both are so fabulous I can't decide!

Xtabay Bridal Salon Love Story: Christy and Bert

When Bert was introduced to Christy his first day at work at OPB, he was compelled to get to know her better. And Christy? “I was just getting over a relationship, and I did not want to get involved with anyone.”

As Christy tells her story, she’s trying on a pale ivory Emma Domb cocktail dress with a sweetheart neckline and beaded spangles across its bodice. Christy has curves in all the best places, and the dress makes the most of them. Perched on her head is a 1950s hat with teardrop pearls that move as she talks.

Christy says Bert made it his business to spend time with her and started hanging out with her, her dog, and her housemate. “Oh, I was interested,” Christy says, “But I still wasn’t ready for a relationship.”

One night at dinner, the thought of romance got to be too much. Christy abruptly tossed up her hands. “No more!” she said. “This can’t go on!” Bert played it cool and pretended he didn’t know what she was talking about, but he told her later that the moment was a turning point for him. At last, he knew he had a chance. Christy laughs when she tells the story.

Now certain it was only a matter of time, Bert accompanied Christy’s housemate to the dog park and confided he wanted more than Christy’s friendship. “He told me he knew she would pass it on to me. It was part of his plan.”

That was three years ago. Recently, Bert dropped to one knee in a meadow in British Columbia and asked Christy to be his wife. In late August 2012, Christy and Bert will be married at Oxbow Park in an afternoon ceremony.

Today, Christy is at the Xtabay Bridal Salon auditioning wedding gowns. Besides the Emma Domb cocktail dress, she has pulled a few other dresses aside.

Her Maid of Honor, Maya, and a good friend, Taylor, are with her. They’re drinking mimosas while rare December sun floods the Bridal Salon, reflecting off crystal chandeliers and warming the fragrance of vases of lilies and roses.

Maya immediately found her Maid of Honor dress, a floor-length 1960s robin’s-egg blue dress with metallic thread woven into a pattern of peacock feathers. Its décolleté neckline transforms the demure cut of the dress into a real stunner. Maya has pale green eyes and black hair, and the combination of Maya’s and the dress’s coloring is worthy of a Turner portrait. She also found a pair of silvery 1950s pumps that complements the dress perfectly.

Christy tried on a long, bias-cut, beaded slip dress with a plunging back that looked pure Jean Harlow. She wasn’t sure it was right for the wedding, but I bet Bert’s eyes would pop out if he saw the way it hugged her body. She slipped a 1930s, grass green velvet wrap over the dress. She seemed relaxed and happy, and I could imagine her on a veranda with an orchestra’s dance music wafting into the summer garden.

Her favorite dress is an elegant, ivory silk column that reaches the floor with plenty of fabric for a train. Its straight-across, strapless neckline and the warmth of the ivory makes the most of the creamy softness of Christy’s skin and the gold in her hair. She tried it with a trailing tulle veil.

Christy says she wants her wedding to be easy and happy, full of friends and laughter. And, of course, she wants to feel beautiful. Judging from her afternoon at the Bridal Salon, feeling beautiful will not be an issue.

She says Bert has put together a ten-day honeymoon for them, but he’s keeping the destination secret, and he changes the subject whenever she tries to get hints. She laughs again. That Bert always seems to have a plan.

The Xtabay Bridal Salon is just about ready to make her debut. As you can see in these sneak preview pics I took today, things are still a bit dis-organized. We still need to hang some things, put away ladders, find a mini fridge...you know, the details. However, as I looked over the collection of vintage wedding gowns we have accumulated I started to get really excited. So many beautiful one of a kind dresses...I was kind of blown away.

Xtabay Bridal Salon: Opening Soon--but not yet!

In the salon....still under construction.

The Xtabay Vintage Bridal Salon will be opening very soon--but not quite yet. The projected opening date is now the beginning of December. Let's say around the 10th. The official announcement hasn't been made but will be coming soon as well as news of the grand opening party!

We had hoped to be open by the middle of this month but due to a plumbing crisis (don't worry- nothing was damaged, just our spirits) and the delayed arrival of some crucial fixtures (mirrors, racks,etc.) we just aren't quite ready.

I must say, it is looking beyond fabulous...You wont be disappointed.

The number one thing that people say when walking into Xtabay is: "WHAT?! Was everyone just smaller back then???", or "I love vintage, but everything is SO tiny--I don't fit in any of it!"

Hearing this starts to get on my nerves, for one--it's been said (as Carl Sagan would say) Billions and Billions of times since I opened 10+ years ago and secondly (and more importantly) it isn't entirely true.

It is true that Americans are getting bigger--whether it be the result of better nutrition or growth hormone injected nutrition-I'm not really sure. All I know is growing up I drank gallons of bovine growth hormone milk and I have size 10 ( and growing) feet and a head the size of a watermelon.

I readily admit that most of the fluffy 50's prom dresses we post have itty-bitty waistlines and yes, I admit I like posting pictures of them because they look so fabulous on the itty-bitty dress forms. So upon honest investigation I must confess, I myself have perpetuated this myth.

That is why I have chosen to show off some of our prettiest size 12 and above dresses. Mind you, back in the 50's and 60's a Size 12 was the equivalent of a modern size 4-6. Hence, when people say that Marilyn wore a size 12, it's not the same as a modern size 12.

So here are some stunning examples of some of the more curvaceous dresses we currently have in stock.
I did pin them to fit the mannequin properly and to show the true shape of them when worn.
There are also a few little hats in there--which are pretty much one-size-fits-all, unless like me you have a watermelon sized head.

A couple of Saturdays ago two of my favorite customers came in warning me they had a whole car load of items to sell.
Now these gals have STYLE. Addie and Nancy are both in their 70's and are destined to appear in the famous fashion blog Advanced Style (here is where I would attempt to add an enclosure link but I still haven't figured out how to do it yet :( ). I assumed the stuff they were selling was their own but they told me it belonged to a woman they are caretakers for. The woman was downsizing and rather than take all her old clothing to Goodwill Addie suggested they brought it by Xtabay to see if I wanted to buy any of it. Well.... did I ever?!

They packed the front of the shop with bags, suitcases and hat boxes...it was a bit overwhelming. As I started to dig I got excited. There were all of these wonderful 50's Lanz dresses! The most charming Lanz dresses I'd ever come across!

Now Lanz is synonymous with a rather frumpy (yet cozy) floor length flannel nitegown. I used to have one when I was a kid and even at age 7 felt silly in it. Don't get the two confused. While they are distant relatives they are now two distinct companies. Lanz of Salzburg is the creator of the birth control nitegowns while Lanz Originals was the creator of the darling, demure yet sophisticated dresses. The Lanz company was started in 1922 by Josef Lanz selling dirndls and lederhosen to tourists. From there it grew...

Since the dresses came in they have been selling like hotcakes. If I had anything like a 25" waist I would have kept a few for myself. Joanne models some of the latest treasures to come in at Xtabay....The peach chiffon Egyptian gown has already sold (I had a feeling you might ask...) Joanne is madly in love with the zig- zag sequined gown and would love it if someone would buy it for her. The white goddess gown is still available and is gorgeous, as well as the black and gold Miami Sound Machine dress. I can just hear the beginning of 'come on everybody let's do the conga, you know you can't control yourself any longa'--- every time I look at it. Joanne models a Cahill gown a few years ago...

Recently a woman came in to sell her wedding gown from 1958. Along with the gown, she had saved her 1958 copy of Modern Bride magazine in which her gown had been advertised. The magazine is filled with Cahill of Beverly Hills ads, at least nine or ten of them. I have always been a fan of Cahill wedding gowns and actually have one tucked away for myself. A gorgeous full length taffeta gown with scalloped hemline, cap sleeves and open neckline. I'm engaged and have been for going on 3 years now, ticktockticktock...
So, being that we have three fabulous Cahill wedding gowns in stock at the moment I thought I'd share some of the pictures and a little about the Cahill himself.

Cahill of Beverly Hills was the firm of William Cahill, premier designer of wedding gowns from the 1940s through the 1960s. Cahill enjoyed a reputation for unerring attention to detail and timeless elegance, and Cahill of Beverly Hills defined quality in bridal wear during this period with it's use of exquisite fabrics and fine craftsmanship. Cahill gowns were considerably more expensive than most gowns back then. To be a Cahill bride really meant something...what exactly? Well, that's up to you...

1. The Mighty Polka Dot: Our version of the totally HOT polka dot dress is this 1970's double layered silk chiffon dress by Pauline Trigere. Waist 27". The sleeves on this dress are glorious and billowy!

2. Colored Fur! We have two fabulous colored fur coats in right now, one is cantaloupe and one is honeydew. They are both from the 60's and look gorgeous on.

3.Cobalt Blue! Wasn't cobalt the "it' color just two seasons ago? 1960's cobalt fur felt hat. 68.

4.Mad Men dresses, I was just tickled when I saw that Banana Republic was doing a "Mad Men" Collection. We have a whole store filled with the originals! Including this early 60's bubble hemmed party dress in autumn colors.
Waist is 25", Bust 34". 248.

5. Art Knit Statement Coat. This incredible technicolor mohair woven coat with purple leather belt is the coat of the season! Would be in my closet if it were a large. It's small. Made in Italy, 248.

6. I just had to post this gorgeous 70's silk chiffon dress by Bill Blass. The quality is exquisite. Paired with a pair of cordovan ( I really just wanted to say cordovan) Ferragamo boots, this would be my fall go to outfit---again, if it was larger. Bill Blass navy silk chiffon dress, waist 24", bust 32". 198. Belt not included.

8. Speaking of fall statement coats, this new-old stock 60's mohair giant yellow and navy houndstooth coat by Mam'selle is so so so chic. Navy leather tie belt included. Small. 248.

9. Grecian Goddess Gown. Timeless. Made by my new favorite vintage designer label Victoria Royal Ltd.
This dress is also tiny. Sorry. Petite size 0-2, waist 23" bust 30".

10. Bold statement jewelry. This incredible necklace is signed Joseff of Hollywood.
Sold.

As you can see we've got our fingers on the pulse of today's fashion. That's right. Leafing through the latest issue of Vogue and Bazaar I was easily able to pluck a few items off the racks and say "look! We're in style--again!".

I Want To Get Married In This........

Yesterday I picked up the new issue of Martha Stewart Weddings and was delighted to see a big, frothy, lace and tulle Vera Wang wedding gown on the cover. It was over the top-- a big romantic dream fairy princess kind of wedding dress. Then I remembered. Tucked away in the back of the store, protected in its zipped garment bag I had a very similar fairy princess wedding dress. A lot like Vera's but pinker and maybe 10,000 dollars less expensive.
Made by Arden of California in the 1950's the dress consists of miles and miles of frothy white tulle and lace surrounding a blushing pink underskirt and bodice. Accordion pleats and tiny seed pearls accent the skirt. The neckline is sheer illusion lace...
This is the dress I would wear if I was 30 pounds lighter and had a couple ribs removed.

I am so excited to see people wearing hats again. It seems fashion just stopped being fun the day people stopped wearing hats...It's as if someone decided that cakes were no longer going to be frosted. Sure they still tasted good, but they didn't look like anything special.
